De Weerd (1988,1990) has taken an extreme view on this question and argues that
the Zwammerdam boats and related ones were built under strong Roman influence.
He has sought to demonstrate that their planks were of standard lengths and
that their frames were spaced out in multiples of the standard Roman unit the pes
