problems concerning absolute and relative chronology, because the dead were treated
in a way which is archaeologically undetectable. Because of the older excavations of
many settlements, stratigraphical information is either suspect or non-existent. It is
generally believed that the Castro culture flourished between the fifth and first
centuries Be. But many settlements continued well into the Roman period and even
to the Middle Ages. Moreover, it has been shown that some of the pottery formerly
regarded as 'castro-ware' belongs in fact to the Roman period. The castros are
