Summer Universiade in Naples,
Italy. Australia achieved medals
in Athletics, Basketball and
Swimming, as the Australian
women’s Basketball team
succeeded in defending their
gold medal from the Universiade
in Taipei (2017). New Zealand
was also successful in achieving
medals in Athletics.
3x3 World Cup
Oceania was represented at
the 3x3 FISU University World
Cup by Macquarie University
from Australia (final placing 5th)
and New Zealand’s University
of Otago (final placing 6th) in
the men’s competition and
by Australia’s University of
Technology Sydney (final placing
8 th) and Lincoln University from
New Zealand (final placing 10th)
in the women’s competition.
Football World Cup
Oceania was represented in the
men’s tournament by Australia’s
University of Wollongong (final
placing 2nd) and in the women’s
tournament by Australia’s
University of Sydney (final
placing 6th). Marcus Beattie
from Wollongong won the
Golden Boot award for most
goals scored, capping off a
successful competition journey
for the men’s team.MyUniSport workshops
MyUniSport is the education
programme of FISU Oceania.
The programme is adaptable
to the needs of the Federation
in which workshops are
hosted and include topics
of event management,
touring team management,
incident management and
team leadership. In 2019,
two workshops were held in
Papua New Guinea, where
200 delegates focused on the
topic of leadership, and in Fiji,
where the 20 delegates present
focused on event management.Oceania NUSF events
Oceania NUSFs played
host to a number of sport
events amongst their various
programmes. Highlights include
UniSport Australia’s National
Championships, held across
44 sports, where University of
Sydney was crowned overall
champion university; Fiji’s Inter
Tertiary Games in September
which attracted over 2 000
students across seven sports,
with Fiji National University
winning the overall title;
University of New Caledonia’sFutsal team competing against
national teams from Pacific
Nations attending the Futsal
Nations Cup; University and
Tertiary Sport New Zealand’s
National Championships,
contested across ten sports,
where University of Auckland
emerged victorious and
Papua New Guinea hosting
four intervarsity tournaments
over the year, expanding its
programme to include more
tertiary institutions across the
country.Looking towards 2020
2020 will bring more
opportunities for Oceania NUSFs
and students within the region,
with key projects including the
rebranding of FISU Oceania to
meet current FISU branding
guidelines, the hosting of a 3x3
Basketball qualifying event, the
expansion of the MyUniSport
education programme,
continued promotion of FISU
in the region and expansion of
IDUS activities.At the 2019 General Assembly,
a new strategy for FISU Oceania
was developed and this will also
be a key focus to ensure it is
managed and NUSFs continueto contribute to programmes
and activities within the region.Finally, FISU Oceania would
like to recognise Mr Martin
Doulton and thank him for his
contribution to our Federation.
Mr Doulton completed his term
as President in November 2019
and has had a long association
with FISU Oceania from initially
being Secretary General and
then President. Mr Doulton was
elected to the FISU Executive
Committee in November, and we
know that whilst his executive
role with our Federation might
be completed, he will continue
