The tribes’ transition from being political deportees to messianic exiles was
complete.
But another key transition is embedded in Deuteronomy as well. Isaiah’s
phrase “lost in [the land of] Assyria” (Eretz Ashur) emerges here as “another
land,”Eretz aheret.Once lost in Assyria, by the time the tribes reach Deuteron-
omy they are, quite literally, in another place altogether. They nowarea loss, an
absence, residing in anEretz aheret. Just what, and where, that other land was
had become a matter wide open for ongoing speculation.
