Challenge Problems

Directions: Read and solve.

  1. True or false?

1
0 is a rational number.
Justify your answer.

Solution:
False
Remember, the rules of fractions require a non-zero
integer to be in the denominator position.
This number doesn’t exist; therefore, it is not rational.

  1. Label each real number as rational or
    irrational. Justify your answer.

√ 25

2

√ 5

2

Solution:
√ 25
2 is rational because it can be rewritten as

5
2
√^5
2 is irrational because 5 is not a perfect square which
makes √ 5 not an integer. This number cannot be
rewritten in fraction form with an integer in the
numerator.
