MC: 8.EE.7b
Problem of the Day
Objective: I will solve equations with rational number coefficients and constants.
Vocabulary Teacher Resources
Fractions:
- Determine the LCD (least common
denominator). - Multiply both sides by the LCD.
- Use inverse operations to solve.
Decimals:
- Determine the power of 10 that will clear
the decimal. - Multiply both sides by the power of 10.
- Use inverse operations to solve.
Considerations:
Tell students to simplify the equation to make
solving as efficient as possible. Practice clearing
equations of fractions and decimals to make
equations easier to work with. If necessary, work
with equations that have one fraction. A review
of LCD and using the distributive property to
clear fractions and decimals may be necessary.
Steps for Integers:
- Collect like terms.
- Isolate the variable.
- Solve the equation.
- Check by inserting the answer into the
equation.
Application of MPs:
MP7: What observations do you make based on past
experience with similar problems?
When I decided to use the distributive
property, I was considering.
MP8: What happens to an equation containing
decimals when you multiply both sides by a
common power of ten?
When I multiply both sides by a common
power of ten, the equation.
