A RENEWABLE BUSINESS

Whilst the manufacturing of iPhones, iPads,
and MacBooks naturally has a huge impact
on the environment, that’s not the only cause
for concern. We’re spending more time on our
devices than ever before, and as such we’re
using more data, more energy, and storing
more files for future use. As part of its mission
to create a greener, cleaner planet, Apple
announced last year that its data centers
are now powered by 100 renewable energy,
as well as its retail stores and offices in 43
countries around the world. At the time of the
announcement, Tim Cook said that Apple was
“committed to leaving the world better than we
found it,” and that the company would “keep
pushing the boundaries of what is possible
with materials in our products, the way we
recycle them, and our work with suppliers to
establish creative sources of energy because
we know the future depends on it.”

In order to reach 100 percent renewable
energy, Apple both invested in existing
renewable energy facilities around the world
and constructed its own, including solar arrays,
wind farms, biogas fuel cells, micro-hydration
generation systems. As well as housing a huge
solar panel on the roof of its newly-opened
Apple Park (one of the biggest solar roofs in
the world, able to power 75% of the park
during peak daytime hours), Apple also has
projects around its campus, as well as in China,
Reno, Nevada, Maiden, North Carolina, Japan,
and Singapore. As the company realizes the
potential of its green bonds, we’ll likely see
more power plants and renewable energy
sources in more international markets, like
