This month’s on-demand TV highlights

include a man looking at some lovely

flowers. Plus death, crime, war, etc...

Hollywood
Glee and American Horror Story
creator Ryan Murphy turns his focus
on Tinseltown’s post-war Golden
Age in this Netflix original miniseries
about the power dynamics of
showbiz. If that sounds dour and
worthy, remember this is the guy
who cast David Schwimmer as
Robert Kardashian – so it’s likely
to be a trashy funfest above all else.
S1 / Netflix, 1 May

Extraction
Having laid down Thor’s hammer
for now, Chris Hemsworth returns
to our screens in this action thriller
penned by Avengers co-director
Joe Russo. Hemsworth plays
a hard-as-nails merc blasting
his way around Asia avoiding the
attentions of gun runners and drug
kingpins. Compared to fighting off
Thanos, it sounds almost too easy.
Film / Netflix, 24 April

Bosch
Titus Welliver returns for a sixth
innings as veteran detective Harry
Bosch – who, despite being a
walking ‘hard-boiled cop’ cliché,
proves a compelling lynchpin as
he serves justice to LA’s crooks.
This season, Bosch finds himself
in a race against time when a crazed
dirty bomber (the bomb’s dirty, not
the bomber) threatens the city.
S6 / Amazon Prime Video, 17 April

After Life
Ricky Gervais has swiftly morphed
from national treasure to televisual
Marmite, but if you’re on the ‘love it’
side of the fence you’ll be overjoyed
that his Netflix original series is
back. Ricky’s local journalist is still
grieving over his wife but, having
developed a more altruistic outlook
through his experiences in the first
series, now wants to help people.
S2 / Netflix, 24 April

The Last Kingdom

It falls to this Bernard Cornwell
adaptation to satisfy Games of
Thrones fans’ continuing demands
for swords, sex and savagery. It’s
based on real history rather than
fantasy nonsense, but this saga
of Anglo-Saxons and Norsemen
struggling for power is as packed
with intrigue and muddy bust-ups
as anything in Westeros.
S4 / Netflix, 26 April

Gangs of London

The Raid is one of our favourite
hidden gems: an Indonesian-made
low-budget ballet of carnage with
a surprising amount of heart. Its
director, Gareth Evans, moves over
to telly with this Sky-produced
action drama promising a similar
blend of adrenaline-fuelled action
sequences, hard-boiled dialogue
and vengeance-driven plotlines.
S1 / Now TV, 23 April

Upload S1 / Amazon Prime Video, 1 May

Given a choice between death and eternity as an avatar in a virtual world that looks a lot
like the real one, many of us would pick the latter without question – but before too
long we might be questioning our decision. That’s the setup for Amazon’s new sitcom
from Greg Daniels (of Parks and Recreation fame). Mixing sci-fi, satire, romance and
more, Upload is sure to strike a chord with anyone who ever spends time pondering
the future of tech. Like you, dear Stuff reader.
