Take a gawk at the wild Slide

PLANET COMPUTERS ASTRO SLIDE

Not to be confused with a DJ Casper comeback single (seriously, the
last thing anyone needs right now), the Astro Slide is still a throwback
of sorts from the company that loves to court PDA-lovers. And yet,
something is amiss... because while the slide-out backlit keyboard
might feel decidedly old-school, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 are most definitely not.
In fact, with a MediaTek Dimensity 1000 processor (claiming to offer
twice the performance of other 5G devices) and all-day battery life,
this Android 10 mini-computer deserves our attention. Rounding off
the specs are a 6.53in touchscreen, 48MP camera, 5GB RAM, 128GB
storage and NFC. It’s live now on Indiegogo and waaay past its target.

WHAT WE KNOW PS5

Still no pics, but Sony has
updated us on the specs
of its new console...

Hit me with numbers!
The PlayStation 5 gets
a CPU based on AMD’s
third-gen Ryzen, with an
eight-core 7nm Zen 2
microarchitecture. The
GPU is a custom version
of Radeon’s Navi and
supports real-time ray-
tracing for ultra-realistic
lighting. At 10.28 teraflops
it’s not quite as powerful
as the 12-teraflop Xbox
Series X, but we’re not
convinced anyone will
tell the difference. It’s also
expected to support 8K
resolution. An 825GB
SSD capable of 5.5Gbps
is monstrous and means
shorter loading times plus
advanced level designs.

What’s it look like?
Yeah, so... no pics yet, but
we know the PS5 will play
physical media, although
Blu-ray hasn’t specifically

been confirmed just yet.
Sketches from Sony’s
patent applications have
been circulating, but look
too ridiculous to be a real
console (even if devkits
reportedly don’t look
too dissimilar). Given the
need for physical media,
it probably won’t be tiny,
but we expect something
much sleeker and less
aggressive-looking.

And the controller?
The DualShock 5 (as we
assume it’ll be called) has
haptic feedback instead
of a rumble pack. More
interestingly, the controller
will have L2 and R2
‘adaptive triggers’ that
can be set for different
levels of resistance,
changing the tactile
feel of play. It’ll reportedly
be a little heavier, but still
lighter than an Xbox One
controller with batteries
installed. The PS5 should
arrive by Christmas for
around £450.
