DucatiST3(2004-2007)
107bhp 69lb·ft 214kg
Why you want one The ST3 is the best of
Ducati’s ST range thanks to revised ergonomics
and a more-relaxed motor. Fast, smooth and
reliable with a good chassis. Owners love them.
Why you don’t The usual Ducati issue —
running costs. It needs belts every two years and
a costly ‘Desmo valve service’ every 6000 miles.
Watch out for If you can find the rare S model
with its Öhlins shock, snap it up.
Target price £3500

BMWF800ST(2006-2011)

85bhp 63lb·ft 182kg
Why you want one The parallel-twin motor
makes reasonable torque with a maintenance-
reducing belt drive. Thanks to a sweet-handling
chassis the ST can be enjoyed in bends.
Why you don’t At low speed the throttle
response is jerky; taller riders may find it a touch
compact; and it’s not great for pillions.
Watch out for Build quality is a bit below par,
so watch for corrosion and inspect drive belt.
Target price £4000

LOCKS AND KEYS

The ignition key should operate
all luggage as Triumph supplied
three accessory locks with the
bike. If only panniers are fitted,
ask for the spare lock

SUSPENSION

Suspension linkages
should be stripped and
re-greased every 12,000 miles.
Ensure this is done, as seized
linkages are common

LUGGAGE

The GT boasts a potential
117 litres of storage, with
two 31-litre panniers and an
optional 55-litre topbox.
The ignition key should
operate all luggage
