year,I thoughtI’ddwellfora minuteortwoonthestateofmusicin2019.

I thinkwealwaystendtomakeclaimsaboutthehighqualityofnew

musicinanygivenyear,butit genuinelyfeelslikewe’veenjoyeda

particularlystrongrunofalbumsinthelastsixmonths.FromSharon

VanEtten,CassmcCombs,SteveGunnandWilliamTylerat thestartofthe

year,throughLambchop,TheCometIs Coming,WeyesBloodandAldous

HardingtoJessicaPratt,JuliaJacklin,KelAssoufandBigThief,it’sshaping

up– dareI sayit – tobea vintageyearalready.

ThismonthinUncut, you’llfinduswritingaboutmoremarvellousnew

music– includingBillCallahan,JakeXerxesFussell,RoseCityBandand

TheBlackKeys– whomaketheirdebutasUncutcoverstars.Ina frankand

revealinginterviewwithJaanUhelszki,DanAuerbachandPatCarneytake

ustotheirNashvillehaunts– froma favouredGreekdinertoDan’sEasyEye

StudiosandPat’shome– andsharetheinsidestoryoftheirsplendidnew

studioalbum,“Let’sRock”. Elsewhere,StephenDeusnertravelstoDurham,

NorthCarolina,tomeetJakeXerxesFussell– anartistwhoseprogress

we’vebeentrackingthroughthesepagesoverthelastfewyearsandwhose

latestalbum,OutOfSight, is oneofmyfavouritealbumsof 2019 sofar.

In many respects, I hope The Black Keys and Fussell represent the best of

whatwe’retryingtoachievehereatUncut. Bothartistsaresteepedintheir

respectivetraditions– inTheBlackKeys’case,thegrowlandpunchof

classicrock,whileFusselldeliversspryinterpretationsofAmericanfolk

song– butbotharedriventorecontextualisetheirinfluencesforourown

age.SaysFussell,“Iknewa lotofmusicianswhoweren’tnecessarily

wearingclothesthatwepicturewhenwethinkaboutthiskindofmusic.

Theymightbewearinga Niketracksuitandplayingsongsfromthe1890s.

It wasallmixedup.Formeit continuestobemixedup,andthat’s what

I’mtryingtogetatwhenI’mplayingthesesongs.”
