The Royal Society’s headquarters at Crane Court, London, where Edmund Halley met with
fellow cognoscenti to view the solar eclipse. The small alleyway still exists, but like much of
central London, the buildings to the left and at the end of the court were lost during World War II
bombing. From Royal Society, Crane Court, off Fleet Street, London: the courtyard, wood
engraving after [W. H.], 1877, Wellcome Collection.
