Step 26: Click on the Create a New
Layer icon at the bottom of the Lay-
ers panel to add a new layer. Get the
Gradient tool (G), and click on the
gradient thumbnail in the Options Bar
to open the Gradient Editor. Choose
the Black, White preset in the Basics
set at the top of the dialog. Double-
click on the bottom-left color stop
below the gradient ramp and change
it to a ruby color (#9b111e). If you
double-click on the bottom-right color
stop, the color should be set to white
(#ffffff). Click OK, and in the Options
Bar, click on the Reflected Gradient
icon, change the Mode from Normal
to Soft Light, set the Opacity to 35%,
check on Reverse, and leave Dither
and Transparency checked, as shown
here. (Note: Selecting Reverse in a
gradient varies from photo to photo.)
Since the white light is reflecting in
the middle of the water, I clicked
about halfway up the staircase and
dragged down to beyond the bot-
tom of the photo (where the writing
is). Press Command-D (PC: Ctrl-D) to
deselect the water.

Step 27: Change the gradient lay-
er’s blend mode from Normal to Soft
Light and reduce its Opacity to 92%.
Rename the layer “Light Reflection
on the Water.” Now you can go
back and tweak any of the settings
you desire. For instance, I lowered
the Opacity of the Ruby Lights on
Columns group to 50% so you could
see more of the green lights in the
column area.

I hope you’ve enjoyed illuminating
lights! I’d love to see what you cre-
ate with this same photo or your
own photos in the KelbyOne Com-
munity forum. Happy restoration
and colorizing! n
