Frogs come from a proud lineage. The
oldest known frog fossil is from a creature
that lived in what is now Madagascar during
the Early Triassic Period, about 250 million
years ago. It probably spent at least part of
its life on land and could breathe air. Today
there are more than 4,800 known species
of frogs. While some are as tiny as a third
of an inch, the Goliath frog can grow to a
length of more than a foot and weigh
more than 7 pounds.
