Using the articles
The articles are the words: the a an
‘The’ is thedefinite articleused for specific items.
‘A’ and ‘an’ are more general. ‘An’ is used before a vowel.
These are theindefinite articles.
Utilising pronouns
Pronounstake the place of nouns:
the boy he
my brother and I we
Relative pronounslink clauses:
This is the girl who stole the book.
Choosing the right verb form
Verbs are ‘doing’ or ‘being’ words.Finite verbsare ‘com-
pleted’ verbs which show person, number and tense.
She threw the ball.
‘Threw’ is the finite verb; ‘she’ is the third person singular
(number) and the tense is the past.
Thenon-finite verbsare:
the infinitive to do to jump
present participle (always ends in ‘-ing’) doing jumping
past participle (used with verb to have) He haddone.
She hasjumped.
