Knowing the articles
There are three articles:
the a an‘The’ is thedefinite articleas it refers to a specific thing.
The dress you made is beautiful.‘A’ and ‘an’ areindefinite articlesand are used more gener-
ally.
Cathy is going to makea dress.‘An’ is also an indefinite article and is used before a vowel
for ease of pronunciation.

Apronounis a word that replaces a noun, a noun phrase or
a noun clause. There will be more about phrases and clauses
later. Each sentence must contain at least one nounorone
pronoun.
Discovering personal pronouns
Personal pronouns take the place of nouns, noun phrases
and noun clauses. They are known as the first, second and
third persons. They can be used as both subjects and objects
within your sentence. Look at the following table.
