WE TALK TO LISA DOWNS ABOUT HER NEW
DOCUMENTARY ON FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR,
AND TO THE FILM’S STAR, JOE CRAMER
WORDS GEM WHEELER
SPECIAL FEATURES
As new DVD releases are stripped back to the
barest extras, it’s never been a better time for
feature-length deep dives into fi lm history. Lisa
Downs is thoughtful when asked to explain
the appeal of documentaries such as hers. “I
love bonus features, but for whatever reason
- budget cuts, or people just not consuming
media the way they used to – a lot of the time,
you just don’t have the opportunity to put them
on releases. I do think these types of fi lms
are really popular at the moment because
people just want to see more about how their
favourite fi lms are made, and to see the cast
and crew talking about their experiences.”
It’s a revealing process that yields much
emotional insight. “Joe had a great sense
of what he loved and didn’t love in certain
scenes, but as we talked more across the
years, more came back to him. It was a part
of his brain that he hadn’t accessed for a
while, and he’s got such a childlike quality
and spirit to him that it came back naturally.
It was as if it had only happened yesterday
because it was so fresh in his mind.”
