The story of songs
SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT BY NIRVANA (1991)‘Men just can’t help acting on
Impulse’ – if Kurt Cobain had been British, chances are one of the most defining songs of an era might have been
inspired by that cheesy bit of 90s advertising. Because he was American, he went for Teen Spirit – another deodorant
marketed for teenage girls. Not that he knew it at the time. The lyric directly came from a spot of graffiti that
Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of another Seattle band, Bikini Kill, drunkenly scrawled across his wall: ‘Kurt smells
like Teen Spirit’. Kurt said that he didn’t realise the deodorant link for a while –even after the single was released
–rather he took it as a statement of rebellion. Just as millions of teenagers have done since. We’re none the wiser
as to what ‘Teen Spirit’ actually smells like – possibly less sickly than Impulse Vanilla Kisses spray, we hope.
