Purchases of sugary drinks
in Chile have fallen by
23% – almost a quarter

  • in two years. The South
    American country banned
    sales of fizzy drinks in
    schools and introduced
    warning labels about their
    impact on health.

Number of days
Christina Koch spent on
the International Space
Station. Koch returned
to Earth after orbiting it
5,248 times. She holds the
record for the longest
single spacef light by
a female astronaut.

The population of bees –
three hives – still alive in
the rafters of Notre Dame.
The insects, who made a
home there in 2013, survived
the devastating fire in April
2019 and, according to
beekeeper Sibyle Moulin, are
preparing to produce honey.

Where sta tistics and optimism meet

Unlikely friends

The blue whale has been
spotted in “unprecedented
numbers” around
Antarctica – a sign the
critically endangered
mammal could be making a
comeback. Researchers led
by British Antarctic Survey
made 36 sightings of blue
whales during their 21-day
2020 survey, identifying
55 animals – compared to
just one seen during a 2018
survey. The population
here is believed to be
less than 1% of its levels
before whaling began.

A pioneering crime
rehabilitation scheme
trialled by Durham
constabulary has led to
a fall in reoffending rates of
15%. The initiative, dubbed
Checkpoint, gives people
who’ve been arrested for
crimes such as burglary
and assault the option of
avoiding prosecution by
enrolling in a four-month
rehabilitation programme.
Around 2,600 people have
taken part in the initiative
and only 6% are believed
to have reoffended.

SMALL CHANGE

Red squirrels are being
thrown an unexpected
lifeline. According to a new
study by Queen’s University
Belfast, the pine marten –
a recovering predator in
the British Isles, which
is recolonising gradually

  • is unwittingly helping
    threatened red squirrels
    by eating more of their
grey cousins. *These articles have been written by our friends at Positive News,
