Berman heads institutional sales under HSBC rejig

HSBC is merging securities services with
global markets, which will be called markets
and securities services, with Allegra Berman
set to take on institutional sales for the new
unit, according to sources.
It is part of a wider restructuring of HSBC’s
global banking and markets business.
Markets and securities services is
expected to be formed in May, once the
bank completes due diligence which must
be undertaken due to the move to shift
securities services from the private to the
public side of its business, according to an
internal memo seen by IFR.
Berman is currently co-head of securities
services alongside Richard Godfrey. Godfrey
will co-head a new product area called

global markets and Greg Guyett is head of
global banking.
As part of the rejig, the derivative clearing
services will be part of securities services

Former politician Baird quits NAB

NATIONAL AUSTRALIA BANK‘s head of consumer
banking and former New South Wales
premier, Mike Baird, has quit the bank.
Baird, who joined NAB in 2017 as head of
corporate and institutional banking before
being tapped to run the consumer bank the
following year, is due to depart on April 15.
Anthony Waldron, a 20-year NAB veteran
and executive general manager in Baird’s

team, will serve as interim head while the
bank searches for a permanent successor.
Baird was once tipped as a potential
successor to Andrew Thorburn as chief
executive. Thorburn was forced to resign
last year after Royal Commissioner Kenneth
Hayne singled him out for criticism in his
lNALûREPORTûINTOûTHEûSECTORûFOLLOWINGûAû
powerful inquiry.

NAB ended up picking Ross McEwan,
who led RBS’ post-crisis recovery and is a
former Commonwealth Bank of Australia
executive, to replace Thorburn.
Baird has also been linked with the
top job at Westpac Banking Corp after
the previous CEO, Brian Hartzer, was
forced to resign at the end of last year
following a massive money-laundering
scandal.
