departingSanDiego(USA),welefttheworldfar

behindandsawnoothervesselsforsixdays.

Whatwedidseeweregreyandhumpbackwhales

withcalvesandbluewhales–sixinoneday.

Mustsee:ThegreywhalesofSanIgnacio

LagooninBajaCalifornia.Thecalvesareso

inquisitivethattheywouldcomeuptothesmall

pangaboatstobescratched.Ievenkissedone.

Toptip:Takephotosbutdon’tlivebehindalens,

it’sanexperience.Seeandevensmellthewhales

(includingtheirpoo)–andgettingafacefullof

whale‘blow’wasamazing.Thephotographerwith

thebiggestlenswillgetthebestshots,butthey’re

oftenhappytoshare,soputyourcameraaway.

Cautionarytale:Theweathercanbe

unpredictable.Takeseasicknessprecautions

beforethewavesarehigherthantheboat.
