Next, I strengthened the darker
neutral tone with Cobalt Blue,
and continued building the coloured
masses. Then take a dry tissue and
lift out some of the pigment to bring
light back into certain areas.7
Another important way to bring
back “light” is to wash away
pigment. Take a wet sponge and set
to work on a lower part of the wash.
Let it run off the sheet or lift with
a tissue.8
Continue with tissue – dabbing,
wiping, lifting – paying close
attention to what the resulting marks
suggest (clouds, waves?).9
When the study dries, it should
appear visibly lighter. This
experimental process is a creative
one, as well, preparing you for further
colour studies.
