Before beginning the exercises, make sure
you’ve downloaded the lesson files from
http://www.oreilly.com/go/Deke-PhotoshopCS5,
as directed in Step 2 on page xvi of the
Preface. This means you should have a
folder called Lesson Files-PsCS5 1on1 on
your desktop (or whatever location you
chose). We’ll be working with the files in-
side the Lesson 06 subfolder.
This lesson examines the myriad ways Photoshop lets you control,
adjust, and manipulate color and luminosity in your images. You
will learn how to:
- Neutralize pervasive color imbalance in an image. .page 183
- Increase the color and vibrance of a drab photo.. .page 188
- Correct highlights, shadows, and midtones
manually using the Levels command........ .page 195 - Use the Curves command to reduce contrast... .page 205
- Recover detail from a backlit photo.......... page 211

Photoshop Adjustments, designed to fix typical
color and luminance issues in your images, are
available from Image→Adjustments or the Adjust-
ments panel. In this video lesson, I’ll give you a
close-up look at applying a typical color adjust-
ment using the Brightness/Contrast feature and
show how the three automatic adjustment tools,
which are designed to quickly fix standard color
problems, work in Photoshop.
