- Add a Vibrance adjustment layer. We’ve lost a bit of color
along the way, so return to the Adjustments panel and press
the arrow at the bottom left. Alt-click (Option-click) the
V-shaped icon (first from the left in the second row) to create
a Vibrance adjustment layer. Name the layer “Color Up” or
something equally descriptive and press OK. Then raise the
Vibrance way up to +85 and set the Saturation to +20.
You can see the resounding success of the adjustments in
Figure 6-30. On the left is our washed-out original image, and
on the right is the result of our efforts with the Levels command.
You may be wondering how I arrived at the specific values that
you entered during this exercise. The answer is trial and error.
I spent a bit more time flitting back and forth between the chan-
nels and nudging values than the exercise implies, just as you
will when correcting your own images. But as long as you keep
your eye on the image preview, you can review each modification
as you apply it. Of course, understanding how to read the histo-
gram, constant companion to the Levels command, is a great way
to learn where best to start. So I’ll gently suggest once more that
you take a look at the aptly named sidebar, “How to Read and
Respond to a Histogram,” which you’ll find back on page 200.
