non-Muslimsthreatened,indigenoussubjectsofaruleralmostnevermadeasustainedattempttocontroltheirown
gov-ernment. Notableswithlocal roots,landlordsor merchants,hardlyever led the
subjectsto overthrowa
regimeand
putthemselves in

Acommonpatternfoundinotherpremodern
civilizationsalmostneverexistsin Islam-dom:
indigenouspeoples
in
chargeoftheirown
governmentsand
staffingtheirownarmies.Whennon-Muslimsthreatened
everythingchanged; danger
totheSharieaortoDral-IslfmmeantthatIslamhadtobede-fended,and inthesecircumstancesMuslin
subjectsoftenbe-camemoreactive. In
earlyIslamictimes,before
manyoftheconquered
peoples
hadconverted,
theMuslimsfeltendangered
and
participatedmoreactivelyinwar.So,too,anoffensivefih6d
stirredMuslimsto
fight.ThemainmarchesofIslandom(Spain,
AnatoliaandtheBalkans,India)demonstratethis
pointvividly,asdoareas
such
asWestAfricaandCentral
