conationalsstrainedtheloyaltyevenofa

personalitiesand
loyalties,militaryslavescameaschil-dren,unformed and

lifelongattachmentstotheIslamic
religion,theirmaster,his
dynasty,andtheir
comrades-in-arms.Themasterexertedcontinuous
pressureontheslaverecruitsto
relinquishtheir
priorallegiancesin favorofhim-self.Enslavementmadepossibletheextended
periodof
gesta-tionwhichchanged
identities.IbnKhaldfin
explains:"Whenapeople
with
groupfeelingtraina
peopleofanotherdescentorenslaveslavesandmawlas,
theyenterintoclosecontactwiththem

ifitweretheirown.9Mercenariesandallies
invariablyhadconcernsoutsideoftheirmilitaryservice.
Theyhad
family,kinsmen,herds,farms,andsoforth,towhich
theydevotedattentionandfromwhichtheywereloathtobe
longseparated.Theseinterests
requiredtimeandconflictedwiththeirservicetotheruler.Slaves,onthe
contrary,couldbemadetoliveinisolationfromtherestof
