gen-erallyincluded allforms ofwealth
acquiredbyforce
ofwar,bothproperty(movable
and
not)and
persons--namely,slaves,asUntilnow,no
studyhasbeenmadeofthe
applicationofthekhums
regulationthroughoutIslamicate
history;butwhereveritheldfirm,itcould
supplytherulerwith massivenumbersof

providethe Muslimrulerwiththousands of
slaves;insuch
instances,itmade
nosenseforthemalltoservehim
personallyorworkinhishousehold.
Theycouldbetterlaborinthefieldsorin
industry,buttheruler
mightprefertousethemto

regimeby
enrollingtheminto
the
armyortheadministration.Thekhums
rulingprobablymadeclosesttheCrusaderscameto
militaryslavery.
