mostMuslimsfromnorthwestAfrica
toSoutheastAsiain
premodern
timesshareda
pattern,itwaspresumablyIslamicate;
butbefore
decidingthis,onemustven-ture stillfarther afield to examine
patterns.
Muslims every-where emphasized cavalry
over
infantry;did this reflectanIslamicatebiasorauniversal
tendency?TheanswertothisliesoutsideIslamdom.
Inordertodiscussthese
questionsmost
precisely,Ishallcon-centrateonanIslamicate
patternthatexistedthroughout
mostofIslamdomandnowhereelse
yethadnoevidentconnectiontoIslam.This is
military slavery,the
systematicacquisition,or-ganizedtraining,and
professionalemploymentof
slavesinmil-itaryservice.It
existed
amongMuslimsfrom
SpaintoBengal(andpossiblyfarther);it
wasabsentoutsideIslamdom
(slavesdidfightfornon-Muslims,butnotinthesame
systematicmannernorwiththesame
degreeof
importance);yetithadno
religious,legal,orinstitutionaltietoIslam.5To

rare;toMuslims
theywerefamiliarand
widespread.CanIslam accountfor thisdifference,even
