clarifytheissues.MuslimandOrientalistViewsLet
us
beginwithareviewofwhatothershavewritteninthis
regard.No
one,Muslimor
orientalist,has
paidmuchattentionto the
positionof
militaryslaves,so materialonthetopicisscanty.PremodernMuslimsnever
recognizedthemasa
distincttypeofslavesandmodernscholarshave
barelyconsideredthequestion.TheShan-a
shapestheMuslims’view.Itdiscussesatlength
the
manystatusesofslavesbut
ignorestheirfunctions.Whether
the
slaveworksina
saltpetermineordirectsan
empire,thelawlooks
onlyathis
legalstatus,andit
containsanimmense
bodyofregulationsspecifyingtheexactdutiesand
rightsof eachtypeofslave(e.g.,ma’dhn,makdtib,ummwalad).

thefunctionofaslave
mightovershadowhis
legalstatus.Militaryslavesdonothavea
separate legalstatus,so
theywere
practicallyabsentfromtheMuslims’consciousnessin
pre-moderntimes.Muslimsdidnot
recognizetheir
extraordinaryfunctionsand
roles.Premodern
writings--legalworks,belleslettres,historical
writings,mirrors
for
princes--allignorethem;indeed,the
subjectofthis
inquirywent
largelyunnoticedinIs-lamicatecivilization.Thishasresultedina
paucityof
bothpri-mary
sourcematerialsand
scholarlyinterest.The fewmodernscholars
whohaveconcernedthemselveswiththis
questionusuallyhedge
theiranswers.
