In
peacetime
ordinaryslaves
workedat
nonmilitary
occupationsas
personalretainers,domestic
servants,
plantationworkers--and
engagedin
warfare
onlybychance
when
everyable
bodywas
needed.Just
as
householdslaves
mightsometimeshelp
toharvesta
crop,so
ordinaryslaves
occasionallyfought;yet
manylimitationsalwayshampered
their
effectiveness.The
slaveownerrarelythought
ofhisordinaryslavesas
potentialsoldiers.
Theyprovided him with various
services,
personaland
economic,whichnormally
had
nothingtodo
withwarfare.

slave-owner to assess his
