usingjust-captured prisoners
ofwar. Civildisturbanceserodedthebondsbetweenmasterandslave,asdomesticenemieswerelessofathreattoaslaveandcould
appealtohisself-interest.Inter-nalwarsoften
gaveslavesthe
opportunityto
bargainwitheitherside,
auctioningofftheirservicesforfreedomand
promisesofbooty.3TheCorinthianPactof 538B.c.
specificallystipulatedthatneithersignatorycouldmanumittheother’sslavesinreturn
fortheir
militaryservices.31Insmall-scalecivilwars,slavesre-sembledmercenaries inso
farastheyactedasdisinterestedprofitseekers;large-scalecivilwars
mighthavethesameeffectasforeigninvasions,however,sincethe
enemycamefromafar
andcouldnotdeal
directlywiththeslaves.The
hugescaleoftheUnited States Civil War
partly explainswhysomeslavesre-mained
loyaltotheirmastersintheConfederacythough
thismeant
disregardingtheirown
long-terminterests.War
prisonerswhohad
justbeenenslavedshowedno
loyaltytotheirnewmasterswhatsoever.
Theyhadtobeforcedto
fight,especiallywhenthe
enemywastheirown
people.Unlikelyasthisuseofslavessounds,itdid
happen.Inhazardoussituationstheseslavescouldbeusedasshock
troopsinordertosavethelivesofmore valuablesoldiers. The
Mongolssystematically deployedcaptivesfromacity
justconqueredtostormthedefensesofthe
nextone;theypushedthesemiserableunarmedslavesuptothe
frontlineandordered
themtoattack
justtouse
upenemyam-munition.The
Mongolwarriorsstoodbehindthem,
preparedtoshoot downslaves whoturned back; ahead theslaves facednearlycertaindeath
againstthe
