The
ineptitudeof
theGermanadministrationherewas
quite
astonishing;101italso
accentuatesthedifferences
betweena
militaryslave
systemandother,more
haphazard,
usesof
slavesassoldiers.While
certain
parallelswithmilitaryslaverycanbe
found
throughoutthe
world,nowhereoutsideIslamdomdid
slaves
performthedutiesand
havethesignificancewhich
Muslims
habituallygavethem.InsideIslamdom
For
afull
millennium,fromtheearly3d/9thcenturyuntil
theearly13th/19th, Muslims
regularlyanddeliberatelyemployed
slavesassoldiers.This
occurred
throughnearlythewholeofIslamdom,fromCentral
AfricatoCentral
Asia,from
Spain
toBengal,
and
perhaps beyond. Few
dynastieswithin
this
longtime-spanandbroadareahadno
militaryslaves? Evenacur-
soryglanceatthe

peoplesrevealstheextraor-dinaryrole
playedbymenofslave
