In their formative
periods,bothJudaism
and
Christianityevolvedoutsideastatestructureandwithout
governmentsup-port;incontrast,Islamfromthefirstandalmost
alwaysthere-after
developedinconjunctionwith
politicalauthority.AftertheJewish
kingdom
was
destroyedin 586
B.C.E.,
Jewshadto
adopttheir
religiontoexile,
dispersal,and
politicaldisenfranchise-ment;asaresult,Judaism
grewindependent
ofconstitutedau-thorityandhadnoneedforit.
Christianityfromits
veryincep-tiondrewaclearlinebetweentherealmsof
religionand
politics,disassociatingitselffrom
government.IntermittentRomanper-secutionduring
itsfirstthreecenturiesaccentuatedthisdivision,although
itdiminishedwhen
ChristianitybecametheRoman
state
religion.The
relationshipof
Christianitytothestatethenbecamea
burningissueforthenextmillenniumanda
half
intheCatholicchurch
(lesssoforotherchurches),butwasnotclearlyresolved.After 1500
c.E.,Protestantreaffirmationofthe
earlyidealof
separationfound
increasingacceptance,sothat
bynowChristianityhas
againturned
awayfrom

powerfulWestEuropean
