Islam.TheactualcourseofIslamicate
historycom-paressadlywith theidealofaunifiedumma underacaliphwagingjih(dagainst
non-Muslims
only.Bothoftheseidealsweretransgressedagainstearlyand
permanently.The
unityoftheummadidlast,admittedly,
forabout
thirtyyears(untilthemur-derofUthmin in 35/656),but
majorintra-Muslimwarfarebegan
in37/657
withthecivilwarbetweenCAliandMueRwiya;a
centurylater,in138/756,theummawasformally
splitwhenthe
Umayyadrulerof
Spainrefusedto
recognizetheAbbasid
caliphas
sovereign;from
thattimeonforabouta
century,anewre-gionbecameindependentevery
five
years.24The
unityoftheummawasneverreestablished.Perceived
commonenemies
(forexample,
theCrusaders,Mongols,Zionists)
could
producelocalfeelingsofsolidaritythereafter,butno
positivebondseffectively
unitedMuslims.Furthermore,thesizeoftheummaanditsdiver-sitymade
unityimpossible;theever
expandingareaofDiral-Islimwas
simplytoo
largetoremain
politicallyunified.The
caliphateenduredaslowerdecline.Itwithstoodthevicis-situdesofthefirstthreecenturies,
remainingpowerful
andvir-
tuallyunchallenged.Shfefs,
Khrijfs,andrebelliousgovernors
had
onlylimited
impact,andevenwhen
the
caliphsfellunder
thecontrolof
militaryslavesinthemid-3d/9th
century,theirprestigesurvived.Thenthefirstrival
caliphemergedin297/909,whentheShfCfFatirnidstook
powerin
Tunisia;not
longafter,in316/929,therulerofUmayyadSpain
alsodeclaredhim-selfamgral-mu’mingn("Commander
oftheFaithful," anothertermfor
"Caliph").More
