TRAVELLING BETWEEN
MOSCOW AND
ST PETERSBURG
The most popular form of
transport between the two
cities is the train, of which
there are ten or more a day.
Prices vary according to the
class of the train – the Red
Arrow being the most expen-
sive – and the choice of seat.
Regular commercial flights
run by Aeroflot, Pulkovo and
Transaero also connect the
two cities. Prices are modest
and tickets are available from
the airport or the Central Air
Communication Agency.
TRAVELLING BY COACH
It is possible to get to Moscow
by coach, but it is usually only
worth it if visitors are travelling
from a neighbouring country
or are on a tight budget. There
are coach routes to Moscow
from the Czech Republic,
Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.
Finnord coaches offer a more
affordable al ternative to trains.
RAIL TRAVEL
Rail is a relatively inexpensive
way to travel within Russia.
Moscow can be reached by
train from Paris, Brussels,
Berlin and several other
European capitals, while
St Petersburg is connected to
Moscow, Helsinki and London.
Travellers should be prepared
for a lengthy wait at the
ARRIVING BY SEA
Arriving by boat can be one
of the most exciting ways to
approach St Petersburg.
How ever, ferries and cruises
operate irregularly, so it is
best to check with a travel
agent for details. Ferries from
Scandinavia usually dock at
the Maritime Passenger
Terminal. Trolleybus No. 10
and bus No. 7 run from here
to the centre or, heading in
the other direc tion, to
Primorskaya metro station.
Luxury cruise ships from the
US, London and else where
arrive at St Petersburg’s cargo
port, 5 km (3 miles) south west
of the centre. Ships have their
own coaches to carry tourists
into town and back.
ARRIVING BY AIR
There is a reasonable choice
of flights to Moscow from the
UK. British Airways, Aeroflot
and Transaero operate direct
flights, while SAS, KLM and
Austrian Airlines run flights
via various destinations. The
interna tional termi nal is
Domodedovo. Transaero and
Aeroflot operate flights from
the US, Australia and Canada.
Trans aero is considered a
good alterna tive to Aeroflot.
Direct flights from the UK
to St Petersburg run daily on
British Airways and three days
a week on Rossiya, while
those from Ireland, Canada,
South Africa, Australasia and
the US are limited. The interna-
tional Pulkovo Airport,
although modern ized, is basic.
