Gdańsk 9
Among the finest cities of northern Europe,
Gdańsk has a history that goes back more
than 1,000 years. One of the wealthiest cities
in Poland, it was completely destroyed during
World War II, but a postwar rebuild ing prog-
ramme has restored many of its grand
buildings. Most of the historic buildings are
located along the pedestrianized ulica Długa
and Long Market (Długi Targ) in the city
centre. Despite severe war damage, the
Old Town (Stare Miasto) retains a handful
of churches, the most remarkable of which
is the medieval Church of St Mary, dating
back to the 14th century. The Upland Gate, part of the fortifications of 1571–6GETTING AROUND
Vehicle access to the historic
part of the Old Town is res-
tricted. The city centre can be
reached by taking a bus or
tram to the Main Station
(Gdańsk Głowny), the Upland
Gate (Brama Wyżynna) or
Podwale Przedmiejskie, and
continuing on foot from there.
Buses, trams or the urban
railway (SKM) serve the
outlying parts of the city.SEE ALSO- Where to Stay p220
