Stretching over the Fejes
valley, from Dózsa György
utca to the St László Church,
the St István Viaduct
(Szent István
Völgyhíd) was
built in 1938, a
major engineering
achievement at the time.
Designed by a
Hungarian, Róbert Folly,
it rises 50 m (164 ft)
above the Séd river
at its highest point.
It offers magnificent
views of the castle and
the Bakony Mountains
to the north.

Hungary’s first ethnographic
museum, the Bakony House
(Bakonyi Ház) was created in
1935, and modelled on the
19th-century houses of a
nearby town. The house is
built on high founda tions
and has a covered terrace.
A stair case leads to a single
door. Inside, items on show
date to 1700.

Designed by the local architect
István Medgyaszay, the
Country Museum (Laczkó
Dezső múzeum) was opened
in 1922. It dis plays local arti-
facts and folk costumes dating
back to Celtic times. Most of
the collec tion was donated by
local Piarist monks, after
whose leader, Laczkó Dezső,
the museum was named. It
also housed Hungary’s first
public library, still a leading
research facility.

Növény És Vadaspark) is
named after 19th-century
biologist and natural historian
Kálmán Kittenberger
(1881–1958).
Spread over 13 ha
(32 acres) in the
lovely Fejes valley,
it is home to 120
species, includ ing
Sumatran tigers,
Kamchatka bears
and wonde r ful
exotic birds.
