TIPS FOR DRIVERS

Length: 87 km (54 miles).
Stopping-off points: All the
resorts along the shore have
a wide range of restaurants.
For a quieter ambience, there are
many small places in Buzsák.
The most panoramic lake views
are from the top of Bokros-hegy,
above Balatonberény.

Zamárdi (^1)
A world away
from noisy Siófok,
Zamárdi is home to
some fine thatched
cottages, including
this arcaded house
on Fő utca, now the
village’s museum.
Fonyód 7
Unremarkable as a resort,
Fonyód sits at the foot of the
largest hill on the southern
shore, the 233-m (764-ft) high
Várhegy, an extinct volcano.
Somogyvár 5
Somogyvár is well worth the detour
south from Buzsák – the impressive
ruins of the Benedictine monastery
here date back to the 11th century.
Balatonföldvár 2
This town owes its name to Iron Age
fortifications called földvár, remains of
which can still be seen. The village’s
leafy promenade is generally consider ed
the finest on the south shore.
Kőröshegy 3
A short detour south of
Balatonföldvár is Kőröshegy,
with a well-preserved Gothic
fortified church dating
from 1460.
Balatonszemes 4
This quiet resort has a Postal
and Carriage Museum. Its
tree-lined streets are ideal
for a stroll and there is an
aquapark nearby.
Buzsák 6
The Living Museum of Arts and
Crafts at Buzsák is the best place
around Balaton to learn about
the traditions of the lake and its
people. Fine cloth, pottery and
garments are still made here.
