Europe’s first Academy of
Agriculture was set up here
by György Festetics in 1797. It
was converted into a museum
(Georgikon Majormúzeum) in
1972, and exhibitions focus
on the history of Hungarian
agriculture from Celtic times
to the present day. There are
separate displays on wine
production in the Balaton

village architecture, with more
than 200 scale models,
including houses, stables and
churches. The second part of
the museum holds waxworks,
featuring 500 life-size figures
of eminent Hungarians, from
Prince Árpád to Imre Nagy.
The third section is a
7-m (23-ft) long model of
Hungary’s Parliament, which
was made by Ilona Miskei
from more than four million
sea-snail shells.

Keszethely, whose remains
were excavated at the end
of the 19th century.
