This 18th-century building
(Régészeti múzeum) was
converted into a museum in



  1. The highlight is the
    story of Pécs in Roman times.
    The museum also features
    artifacts left behind by Goths,
    Huns, Tatars and Visigoths
    and a bust of Marcus Aurelius.

This grand Neo-Renaissance
synagogue (Zsinagóga), built
in the 1860s, indicates the high
standing that the 5,000-strong
Jewish community had in
Pécs soc iety. They lived in
Pécs until 1944, when the
anti-Semitic Arrow
Cross gov ernment
sent them to camps
in Auschwitz (see
pp194–7). A mem-
orial commem o-
rates those who
were killed.
Services take
place in the
smaller prayer
hall at the side.

This 16th-century mosque
(Jakovali Hassan Dzámi) was
converted into a Catholic
church in 1714, but its 23-m
(75-ft) high minaret
remains intact.
Since 1975 it has
been a museum
docu ment ing the
Ottoman occupa-
tion of Pécs. Many
exhi bits were don-
ated by the Turkish
gov ern ment as a
mark of friendship
in the 1990s.

Built in 1579 for Gazi Kasim
Pasha, this lovely mosque
(Gazi Kasim Pasha Dzámi/
Belvárosi Templom) was the
largest in Hungary, and
remains its most important
Ottoman monument.
Converted into a Christian
church in the late 1600s,
calligraphy at the entrance
and a prayer niche are
reminders of its origins.


P Király Utca
Largely pedestrianized, Király
utca is an archi tectural show-
case. Art Nouveau façades
can be seen at No. 5 –
Palatinus hotel (see p392) –
as well as at Nos. 8, 10, 19
and the National Theatre.
The St Pauline Church at
No. 44 is in Baroque style.
