P Minaret
Knézich Károly utca. # Apr–Oct:
10am–6pm daily. &
A relic of the Ottoman
regime, Eger’s minaret
(Minaret) is a classic of its
genre. Sleek and perfectly
symmetrical, the 14-sided
sandstone tower rises on an
incline to its needle-like
point, 40 m (131 ft) above
the street. It is topped with
a crescent moon and a cross.
Closed for 150 years after
the mosque next to it was
demol ished in 1841, the
17th-century minaret is now
open to visitors and offers
fine views of the city to those
prepared to climb the 97
steps up to the balcony.

R Minorite Church
Dobó István tér
Set against the background
of the open spaces of Dobó
István tér, the ornate exterior
of the former Minorite Church
(Szent Antonius Minorita
Templom) has more aesthetic
appeal than the cathedral.

responsible for most of the
ironwork that typifies many
of the buildings on Kossuth
Lajos utca, as well as the
famous Hungarian National
Gallery (see p340) in
Budapest and Festetics Palace
in Keszthely (see pp372–3).

The rounded, tiered façade
and twin towers were
designed by Bohemian archi-
tect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer,
but the church was not
completed until 1773. It is
dedi cated to St Anthony of
Padova and scenes from the
saint’s life feature in the
ceiling frescoes painted by
Márton Raindl. St Anthony is
also depicted alongside the
Virgin Mary on the altar, in a
painting by Johann Kracker.
