Every month a gala evening is held when the chef is given the freedom to create new masterpieces. There is a

Housed in Siófok’s former post office, the Fogas specializes in fish freshly caught from Lake Balaton (see p368–9).
There is also a selection of meat dishes and a very good children’s menu. Tempting pastries are made daily on the
premises. Fogas also serves a good selection of wines.

This superb traditional Hungarian restaurant is decorated with folk art, with painted scenes of Siófok’s past in place
of windows. Tables are set around a vast open hearth. Try the extra-hot goulash accompanied by Balaton wines
from the outstanding wine list. Open March to December.

In a gorgeous Neo-Baroque house in the heart of Old Sopron, the Wollner hotel is home to some of the city’s best
food. There are two dining options – the wine cellar downstairs and the courtyard terrace at the back. Both have
the same excellent-value menu featuring traditional Hungarian dishes. The hotel also holds wine-tasting events.

This is a truly outstanding restaurant with one of the best wine lists in the country. Everything about the place
exudes luxury, from the polished parquet floors to the superb garden terrace. Refined dishes include goats’ cheese
from Őrség served with olives and garlic on toast.

Located a short distance from Szeged, this restaurant is bright and atmospheric. Fish soup is the signature dish
among a number of regional specialities. The restaurant is set around a vast attractive courtyard and its cellar has
a very good selection of wines from southern Hungary.

Besides an outstanding selection of Belgian beers, the long menu at the Belgian Beer Café features a number
of traditional Belgian dishes, including mussels and sausages. The interior, which features wood panelling and sturdy
stiff-backed chairs, successfully conjures up the atmosphere of a 19th-century café.

The Aranysárkány (Golden Dragon) offers high-quality local dishes with game taking pride of place. There is
goose, venison and even fried pigeon on the menu, all cooked in an open kitchen. The prices are reasonable,
but patrons are advised to choose their wine carefully if they are on a budget.

This outstanding restaurant in the cellars of Szentendre’s National Wine Museum offers a great selection of
traditional Hungarian food, including venison, all served with equally worthy wines. There is also a small room
on the ground floor for larger groups, and a small but sublime terrace.

The best place to eat in Vác is also a perfect spot to relax in the large garden and terrace that form one of the
town’s most popular meeting places. The food is excellent, with inventive dishes such as pork filled with seasoned
feta cheese, served with a Greek salad. Prices are relatively high but well worth it.

Renovated in 2000, this high-class restaurant is the best in town and serves meat-heavy Hungarian staples as well
as a melange of dishes from far and wide – New Zealand green clams, for example. In summer there’s a barbecue
in the garden as well as regular jazz evenings.

There are few good restaurants in Visegrád, but the Renaissance is one of the better establishments. It is a
medieval-themed restaurant, with all diners seated at long or round tables and issued with paper crowns. Substantial
meat portions are served along with wine from huge jugs. Jousting performances take place in the courtyard.
