GETTING AROUND
Vienna’s city centre is
easily explored on foot.
Trams 1 and 2 take visitors
around the Ringstrasse,
past many of the important
sights. Fiakers (horse-
drawn carriages) are a
novel way to get around.
Hop per buses serve the
city cen tre while larger
buses run to the outer sub-
urbs, which are also served
by the U-Bahn (subway)
ser vice. The Badner Bahn,
a tram line, also connects
major sights.

O

riginally a Celtic settlement,
Vienna’s location on the edge
of the Hungarian plains
made it vulnerable to attacks, and
Barbarian invasions reduced the
town to ruins by the early 5th century.
In the 10th century, the German
Babenberg Dynasty acquired Vienna
and it became a major trading centre.
Later, in the 13th century, Vienna
came under the control of the
prosperous Habsburgs, who remained
in power until 1918. In the 16th
century, the threat of Ottoman

invasion hindered its pro gress, and it
was not until 1683, with the final
defeat of the Ottoman Turks, that
Vienna was able to flourish. In the
mid-19th century, the city’s defences
were demolished and the Ringstrasse,
a wide circular boulevard, was built,
link ing new political and cultural
insti tutions. Today, Vienna is an
architectural delight, with its
magnificent palaces, imposing
churches and world-class museums.
The city’s rich cultural scene and
vibrant nightlife add to its appeal.
