Eastern and Central Europe (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

(Ben Green) #1
CROATIA 475

Cross by Leandro da Bassano,
and six scenes inspired by
the Passion of Christ by
Martin Benetović.
There are also many works
of art in the rooms facing
the cloister. The painter of the
Last Supper in the refectory
is unknown. The 16th-century
Španjola fort and early 19th
century Napoleon fort both
offer splendid views of
the town.

Stari Grad
This town was originally
called Pharos and was found ed
by the Greeks in the 4th cen-
tury BC. Remains of the town
can be seen in Ciklopska Ulica.
Around Pod Dolom are the
ruins of a Roman villa with
mosaic floors.
Stari Grad lies at the end of
a long bay and the key sights
are situated around the main
square. Facing the square are
the 17th-century Church of St
Stephen (sv Stjepan) and the

Baroque Biankini Palace
(Palača Biankini), the home
of an archaeological collection.
The heart of the town is
dominated by Kaštel Tvrdalj,
the fortified residence of
Petar Hektorović (1487–1572),
which houses an Ethnographic
Collection and has a seawater
fishpond. Hektorović, a poet,
built the fort in around 1520.
He was the author of the
poem “Fishing and Fishermen’s
Conversation” (Ribanje i
ribarsko prigovaranje) in
which he describes a fishing
trip around the islands of Hvar,
Brač (see p472) and Šolta.
The Dominican Monastery
(Dominikanski Samostan) was
founded in 1482. It was rebuilt
and fortified after des truction
by the Turks and has a rich
library and a collection of
paintings. The town also has
an International School of
Painting and Sculpture.

Vrboska
The road leading to this small
village is a marvellous sight
in June when the surrounding
fields are covered with
lavender. Vrboska is home to
the 16th-century Church of
St Mary (sv Marija), fortified in
1575 to provide shelter for vil-
lagers in the event of a siege.
The Baroque Church of St
Lawrence (sv Lovro) has
a polyptych (c. 1570) on the
main altar by Paolo Veronese
and a Virgin of the Rosary by
Leandro da Bassano.

Sućuraj
Lying in a sheltered bay at the
eastern tip of the island is the
village of Sućuraj with the
remains of a castle built by
the Venetians in around 1630.

Environs
To the west of the island
are the Pakleni Islands. Facing
the town of Hvar, these islands
are uninhabited and mostly
wooded. Their name derives
from the paklina (resin) that
was once extracted from the
pines and used to water-
proof boats. During the sum-
mer, boat trips to the islands
depart from Hvar. The nearest
island, Jerolim, is given over
to naturism.
The island of Šćedro, off the
south coast of Hvar, is covered
in pines and maquis. Illyrian
tombs and parts of a Roman
villa have been found here.
