Built in the late 19th century,

this is the city’s main syna-

gogue (Sinagogă Neologă),

topped with four silver onion

domes. It has had a chequered

history, first attacked in 1927

by the Romanian fascist

organi zation, the Iron Guard,

and then during World War II.

It has now been restored

to its original design and

serves as a Holocaust

memorial for the city’s

small Jewish community.

are located just outside the
city centre on a hillside park.
It has six greenhouses filled
with equa torial and tropical
plants, including specimens
from Japan, as well as flora

Opened in 1906, the National
Theatre and Opera (Teatrul
National si Opera) started as a
Hungarian theatre. The majes-
tic building was designed by
Austrian archi tects Ferdinand
Fellner and Hermann Helmer,
and it has been home to the
Romanian theatre and opera
since 1918. Its striking Art
Nouveau lobby leads into a
grand auditorium seating up
to 1,200 people. Regular
national and inter national
perfor mances take place here.

Founded in 1581, this

(Universitatea Babeş-Bolyai) is

the largest univer sity in

Romania. It started off as a

Jesuit Academy but was later

closed down when Romanians

were denied education in their

language and taught in

Hungarian instead. After the

country’s liberation, two univ-

er sities were established to

pro vide edu ca tion in both

languages. In due course, the

institutions were merged and

adopted a name inspired by

the Romanian sci entist Babeş

and Hungarian mathematician

Bolyai. Today, the university

has a student population of

45,000 and with 21 faculties.
