Housed in what was intended
to be eastern Rumelia’s new
parliament building, the
museum documents the
reunification of Plovdiv
with Bulgaria in 1885.
Exhibits include declarations,
weaponry, uniforms and
photo graphs of soldiers.

U Imaret Mosque
ul. Han Kubrat.
Dating from 1445, this is one
of more than 50 mosques
built in Plovdiv during the
Ottoman period. Imaret
means “shelter for the home-
less”, and this was the
mosque’s original function. Its
square walls support a central
dome and a minaret with
unusual zigzag brickwork.

This grand house is a fine
example of National Revival
architecture. An interesting
feature is the courtyard struc-
ture with a window to the
street called the klyukarnik
(gossip room), where the
inhabi tants could drink tea
and chat. The rooms contain
many original furnishings,

This elegant house, its pale
blue outer walls decorated
with floral motifs, looks on to
a peaceful courtyard garden.
It was built between 1835 and
1840 for Stepan Hindliyan, a


imported from the East and
West to blend European and
oriental styles.

The interior has murals depict-
ing the European cities that he
visited. The house also has a
hammam with a marble floor,
and a domed ceiling with tiny
win dows. The first-floor salon
has a stunning panelled ceil-
ing and a marble fountain.
