    The prize exhibit of the
    Navy Museum is the torpedo
    boat Drûzhki (Intrepid)
    displayed outside the museum.
    In 1912, during the First
    Balkan War, the Drûzhki
    secured the Bulgarian
    navy’s only victory in the
    conflict when it sank a
    large Turkish cruise ship.
    The museum itself holds
    exhibits relating to navigation
on the Black Sea starting from
    the 6th century BC.

Begun in 1862, this urban
park was designed by Czech
landscape architect Anton
Novak, with trees and plants
from Bulgaria and around
the Mediterranean. Among
its flowerbeds and shaded
paths are several family-
friendly attractions, including
an Aquarium with stingrays,
a Planetarium and a
Dolphinarium with regular
shows. Stretching out below

the Sea Gardens is Varna’s
long, sandy beach. Lined with
outdoor restau rants, cafés and
bars, it is ideal for lazy days of
swim ming, sunbathing, eat ing
and drinking. After dark, the
beach is one of the Black Sea’s
liveliest spots, with clubs open
until the small hours.

Located 8 km (5 miles) from
central Varna, the spectacular
Evksinograd Palace, built for
Prince Aleksandûr Batenberg I,
was completed in 1886, and
served as the summer resi-
dence for Bulgarian royalty
until the Communists came
to power in 1944. It was
designed by famous Viennese
architect Rumpelmeyer and
its gardens were laid out by
French landscape designers in
the 19th century. Today, the
palace is still a state property.

The museum traces the
history of Varna from the late
18th century, when it was a
neglected coastal town, to
the mid-20th century, when
it became a major port and
popular seaside resort.
