The town’s half-timbered Altstadt

crowns a hilltop overlooking its spa -

cious 19th-century spa quarter. The

14th-century Lutheran Stadtkirche

(open daily) blends Hessian and

Westphalian influences and contains

a beautiful winged altar by the

medi eval artist Conrad von Soest

(1394–1422). North of the old town

is the Baroque Schloss Friedrichstein,

which houses a museum (closed

Mon) of Hessian military history

and hunting.

brown signs for Edertalsperre on

B485. Turn left for Affoldern then

follow Randstrasse to reach the right

bank of the Eder Dam.

Kellerwald-Edersee. It is known for

outdoor activities such as angling,

sailing, waterskiing, hiking, mountain

biking, and Nordic walking; other

pastimes include cruises on the lake

(personenschifffahrt.edersee.com).

The dam here is famed as one of

the targets of the 1943 Dambuster

raids, though it was swiftly repaired

and looks as solid today as when it

was completed in 1914.

ª Continue beside the reservoir on

the Randstrasse, turning right on to

Abelauf/Seestrasse to reach Waldeck.
