Franconia of the Prince-Bishops

For many centuries, Franconia’s Prince-Bishops held both

spiritual and political power in this region. Drawn from the ranks

of the nobility, they left a lasting cultural legacy in this fascinating

corner of northern Bavaria (Bayern), which ranges from Bamberg’s

well-preserved historic core to the splendid Baroque and Gothic

master pieces through out the region. Amidst the palaces and

churches are traditional Weinstuben and old pubs where one can

enjoy Franconia’s distinctive food, wine, and beer. Away from

the cities, the smaller towns and villages often have a rustic,

lost-in-time charm. This drive takes visitors through lovely land-

scapes ranging from the valley of the meandering Main river

to the startling geology of Fränkische Schweiz and the unspoiled

rural idyll of Naturpark Steigerwald.
