Jurassic geology adds drama to the gentle landscapes of Bavaria’s Naturpark

Altmühltal, one of Germany’s largest nature reserves. Castle-topped crags stand

sentinel over the valley of the placid Altmühl river that flows east to join the

Main-Donau canal and the Danube. Along the way, there are small towns of great

historic and architectural interest, while the Danube has produced a landscape

of extra ordi nary loveliness in the narrow gorge known as the Donaudurchbruch.
